  • Sometimes, money can be found in knights, cavalry units, sergeants, and more rarely, normal soldiers. The greed of enemy soldiers is also limited, with money purses not affecting sergeants, while ale does affect them. One is a woman, who wears a red apron the other, a man, who wears a red-and-blue shirt. On the other hand, there are two types of folk, who flee at the sight of a merry man, and alert nearby enemy soldiers. Common folk sometimes offer help as well (although this happens very rarely). In addition, in every town, the player can give money to beggars, who, when given coins and purses, help by providing hints and tips. While the merry men can kill or wound enemy soldiers, their resources are limited to a certain extent, with main characters having more than minor miscellaneous ones. In the final mission, Robin must fight the Sheriff, thereby defeating the Prince. Missions generally include ambushing convoys and infiltrating towns, usually to gather information or even liberate a notable outlaw from the sheriff's clutches. The responsibility of getting the ransom of £100,000 to save the king falls into the player's hands.

After the player finishes the first and second missions, meets Maid Marian in the Nottingham cathedral, and subsequently tries to meet the Prince, it is understood that King Richard has been kidnapped by Leopold of Austria for a ransom, and that the Regent Prince John is unlawfully usurping the rightful king.

Legend of Sherwood really is something of an unexpected treat that is well worth digging out when you're in the mood for some historical shenanigans. The game starts with Robin Hood, arriving in Lincoln from the Crusades, and finding out that his inheritance has been stolen by the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham. The gameplay itself is enjoyably varied, with a nice mix of stealth, tactics and violence, while the story, although not original, is compelling enough. Imaginative and humorous elements like Friar Tuck's ability to make soldiers drunk help give the game a distinct flavour and personality of its own, something which is supported by the fine in-game graphics and well directed cutscenes. While much of the gameplay is quite familiar from similar games, there are enough unique features on display here to make Legend of Sherwood worth playing.

The gameplay puts players in charge of up to six different characters, each with their own unique skills and weapons, and tasks them with sneaking, fighting, bribing and talking their way through a series of stealth-based missions, with the ultimate aim of stopping Prince John's nefarious schemes. Throw into the mix a kidnap plot and the usual array of colourful characters, including Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and Little John, and you have all the makings of a complex slice of historical fun. The plot revolves around classic conflict between Robin Hood, his Merry Men, and the evil Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham who are seeking to expand their power. The game takes an intriguing spin on gameplay, and instead of an action/adventure in the traditional sense, we instead have a stealth/real-time strategy game that is reminiscent of Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, or the Commandos series. This is a little known but highly enjoyable take on the enduring legend that is the bold bandit of Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood.
